Jazz at the Abbey – A History of the Jazz Piano

At the turn of the 20th century, a new music emerged, born from the constant back and forth between the different cultures of the American melting pot.

Having been immersed from their arrival in Africa in the music of the white settlers which they heard in churches, kiosks, street shows, parades... black and Creole musicians appropriated it and tailored it to their own measure by bringing new ingredients: the flavor of the blues, the fervor of the "spirituals", the syncopations of ragtime... in an improbable gumbo from which jazz would emerge.

With their 10 fingers and 88 keys, pianists will play a major role in the stylistic evolution of this nascent music that will embrace the 20th century.

The Médium Ensemble was born from a dream and a long period of development: to bring together nine like-minded musicians around an ambitious project, halfway between the orchestral richness of a big band and the improvisational freedom of smaller ensembles. Under the guidance of saxophonist and composer Damien Prud'Homme, this nonet embodies a "Dream Team" where each instrumentalist finds their place and space.
